The magnifying glass is placed in such a way, that the picture shown on the wall is a focussed
representation of the outside world as a contrast to the old bunker it's placed in.

- Muzak #3

Sound work made for the Impakt Festival 2010, Matrix City.

The work was to be played over the speaker system in shopping mall "Hoog Catharijne" in Utrecht.
Researching the relationship between the shopping visitors and their surrounding.
Work was not shown, because the owners of the mall were afraid of the reactions of the people shopping.

- The weight of Sound

The sound of raindrops is being played over the speakers. The movement of the sound makes the scale move. In this way the "weight" of the sound is visible.

- Question Space

In this installation, I was searching for different ways to deal with the concept of space. By questioning the fixed ideas people have about the space there in, I want to start a discussion about space and the building in which the space is located.

Untitled Physics #2 deals with the presence of subsonic bass sounds in the world around us. The sounds create the motion within the work and show the forms of the inaudible sounds.
The work is programmed to make its own decisions based on the choices it made before. By controlling different parameters, it is able to create a constant changing order of motion.

An attempt in which uselessness is the keyword. In three hours, the time it cost me earlier that day to make a table, I try to slice as far as possible in a beam of wood with a cheese slicer.

A camera tracks the movement of a goldfish.
The drawings the goldfish makes by swimming around in his bowl are projected on an empty canvas.
Whenever the goldfish swims towards the left corner of his bowl, the drawing is saved and published on a blog. In this way the goldfish takes over the roll as artist.

The beam seems to dent the wall, by just leaning against it.
Searching for the illusion of the alteration of the material, the concrete wall seems to react as a piece of cotton.

"No wind is favorable" is part of a project which I am currently working on.

I grew up living in the Dutch provence of Zeeland, my house was only a stone's throw away from the sea. As a kid I would see boats all around me, coming in from far destinies or leaving to the open sea. My latest project is all about the need for adventure I would feel as a kid, as I would see the boats passing. Currently I'm designing an 8 meter paper folded boat, which I'm gonna use to sail down the Danube. In this work I'm searching for the confrontation between the innocence of the form of the paper boat, and intensity of a long adventure. The searching of the adventure you dream of as a kid.

The fantasy and the longing for adventure , which are included in the form of the boat, are being realized by taking the steps to make the actual journey. The work now consists of documentation of the preparations and a series of smaller works which all incorporate the same fantasy and hunger for adventure as the big boat has.

The shovel is being placed in the space in such a way that it seems that somebody just left it there.

Playing with the well-known form of the shore and the speed of making the work.
The action of putting the shores together cancels the flexible nature and creates a new static object.

Untitled Light Object #3 (Aurora Borealis 2.0)

Aurora Borealis is based on two simple physical rules, the reflection of light and the movement of sound. In this installation
these two media meet to create a game of light and sound.. The technological part of the installation is based on a "random"-theory,
both light and soundwaves are created on a random pattern, so that no moment in the installation is the same.

“Wanneer in het spel vervangende objecten als object gekozen worden en zich juist hieraan het spel in alle hevigheid ontwikkelt (pop, stokpaardje), dan komt dit, omdat deze zijde van de 'bildhaftigkeit' zoo sterk daarin uitkomt en wordt doorleefd. Daarom verwerpt het kind de werkelijkheid nabijkomende, zakelijk 'objectief' zijnde, pop en verkiest de 'schijn' (bijv. de pop ), die den zin van het werkelijke slechts in beeldvorm brengt, en in zijn eenvoud, de veelvoudigheid van het werkelijke slechts als mogelijkheid demonstreert, niet als werkelijkheid.”

Al mijn werk komt voort uit een fascinatie met de momenten van verveling.
Deze momenten vragen om handelingen die worden gedaan om de verveling tegen te gaan. Doordat deze handelingen gebeuren onder een vorm van druk (het snel tegengaan van de verveling), ontstaan nieuwe ideeën en nieuwe oplossingen. Vergelijk het met een kind wat op een regenachtige zondagmiddag niks te doen heeft en een hut gaat bouwen van de boeken uit de boekenkast.
De verveling geeft mij de drang om mij volledig over te geven aan nieuwe experimenten of onderzoeken. Dit staat voor mij gelijk aan het spelen van een kind. Niet de kennis moet het werk vormen, maar de beleving van het spelen maakt het werk.
Binnen het werk is het spelen een belangrijk onderdeel. Ik onderzoek de mogelijkheden zonder van te voren een vaststaand concept te hebben. Het spel is in mijn proces het uiteindelijke uitgangspunt voor een nieuw onderzoek of werk.

Ik heb mij lang geconcentreerd op het aanleren van nieuwe technieken. Veel van mijn oudere werken zijn ontstaan uit de experimenten die ik deed om onderzoek te doen naar voor mij nieuwe technieken. Het constant aanleren van nieuwe technieken heeft als doel dat ik in het spelen en onderzoeken geen beperkingen ondervindt in de uitvoering.

Mijn fascinatie gaat uit naar de complexiteit van de wereld waarin wij leven, er lopen zoveel processen tegelijkertijd door elkaar heen. Dat kunnen sociale processen zijn, zoals een gedeelde belevenis of een manier van denken, die ons is aangeleerd in onze jeugd.
Los hiervan staan de talloze processen die, los van de mensheid, om ons heen gebeuren.
Hierbij ga ik uit van natuurkundige processen, maar ook van bepaalde denkpatronen, die het voor de mens mogelijk maken om makkelijk over deze complexe, verwarrende gebeurtenissen heen te stappen.

Met mijn werk wil ik de toeschouwer bewust maken van deze processen en simpelheid en schoonheid van de wereld om ons heen. Het is voor mij belangrijk dat de toeschouwer bij het zien van het werk opnieuw gaat nadenken over de dingen die hij voor normaal neemt. Dit kan bijvoorbeeld zijn dat de toeschouwer zich bewust wordt van de complexiteit van de geluidsgolven om zich heen, en daardoor met een verfriste blik om zich heen kijkt. Maar dit geldt tevens voor het zoeken naar simpele oplossingen, mensen zitten vaak vast in bepaalde aangeleerde routines. Door hen te confronteren met een simpele speelse oplossing, wil ik de toeschouwer uit zijn aangeleerde manieren halen. Door de uiteindelijke werken simpel te houden, zoek ik, samen met de toeschouwer, naar een manier om afstand te nemen van de complexiteit van de wereld waarop wij ons bevinden.

Bij het uiteindelijke werk draait veel om de relatie die het werk aangaat met de ruimte waarin het werk wordt gepresenteerd. Dit kan zowel een beeldende relatie zijn, waarbij het werk de ruimte beïnvloedt, of de ruimte wordt een fysiek onderdeel van het werk.

Het werk gaat uit van de natuurkundige waarden van een object of ruimte. Het belangrijkste uitgangspunt hierbij is de perceptie van de toeschouwer. Door vaststaande ideeën over het object of de ruimte te ondermijnen, wil ik de waarneming veranderen. De kleine aanpassingen die hiervoor nodig zijn, hebben veel invloed op het hoe en wat van de ruimte of het object. Belangrijk hierbij is dat de vaststaande waarden en ideeën, die de toeschouwer heeft, losraken.

Niets is wat het lijkt en alles lijkt op wat het niet is.

The work is about the physical values of the object or space. The main point of interest is the perception of the viewer. By attacking the fixed idea about the object or space, I want to change the way people see and experience the work and the world around them. The small adjustments needed to do so have a lot of influence on the values the viewer will give to the object or space around them.
Important in this is that the fixed values and ideas of the viewer are disconnected.

Nothing is what is seems, and everything is what it doesnt seem to be.
